Photoshoot Prep Guide for the Best Headshots

(A Web Designer’s Honest Guide)
You did it. You launched the website.
You spent months (maybe even years) obsessing over the color palette, the portfolio images, and the perfect “About Me” copy. It’s gorgeous. It’s professional. It’s finally live.
But months later, the only people visiting your site are your mom and your best friend.
You type your services into Google (e.g., “Vancouver Family Photographer” or “Virtual Marketing Assistant”) and… you are nowhere to be found. But your “competitor” (whose website is, frankly, looking a little dated) is right there in the number one spot.
It’s frustrating. It feels personal. And as a web designer, I’m going to tell you the honest, jargon-free truth.
Google isn’t a human being. It doesn’t have eyes. It cannot see your stunning new logo or feel the “vibe” of your design.
Google is a very advanced “filing cabinet.” Its only job is to provide the most relevant, reliable, and fast answer to whatever question someone types in.
If your gorgeous website isn’t optimized for Search Engines (SEO), Google cannot “read” it. To the algorithm, your site looks like an empty room.
You have a digital store on a stunning property, but you forgot to put up any road signs letting people know you exist.
When I review a beautiful small business website that isn’t ranking, I almost always see these three issues:
1. No Keywords (or the Wrong Ones) Keywords are simply the phrases your dream clients are typing into Google. If you are a life coach in Austin, but your website headline is “Helping You Find Your Joy,” Google has no idea what you do or who you serve. You must use specific language like “Austin Life Coach for Busy Professionals.”
2. Lightning Slow Site Speed Google prioritizes user experience. If your high-resolution portfolio photos make your site take 5 seconds to load, Google will punish you. Modern users (and algorithms) are impatient. Slow sites lose leads.
3. Ignoring “Mobile-First” Design Over 60% of web searches happen on a phone. If your site looks stunning on your desktop but is jumbled and impossible to read on a mobile device, your potential clients (and Google) will leave immediately.
SEO can feel massive and overwhelming, but I have a secret for you: You don’t need to be an algorithmic wizard to see results. You just need to handle the foundation.
Most small business owners get 80% of their results by just fixing the simplest technical things they are currently ignoring.
If you read this and thought, “I love my business, but I do NOT love the tech,” I made something just for you.
